In today’s fast and hectic world, stress has become a common phenomenon in everybody’s life. It can be defined as the way one feels and reacts while dealing with pressures and challenges. One can also experience stress at school, within relationships or at the workplace. People may also be stressed while they try to cope up with either financial or health-related matters. There can be an enormous variation while responding to stress from individual to individual. For some people being stressed can actually be a motivating factor in their lives. The feeling is known as stress where a person strives to work even harder and is more focused. For other people, stress can restrict his or her focus and increase mistakes.
People who suffer from performance anxiety are frequently stressed out and get easily exhausted. There are some who cannot even focus because of their internal concentration. Performance anxiety can be detected quite easily when a person appears to be nervous and fidgety. There are cases though when some people though going through performance anxiety may look calm outwardly. However, brains of these people are never calm. In fact, there is no end to their thoughts. There could be internal chatter on a continuous basis, which may even rob them from their existing quality of life and disrupt their sleep. These people do not dwell in present. Rather they are always worrying about what will happen in the future or live in their past.
Anxiety treatment can be medically, with psychological counseling, or independently. Ultimately, the treatment path depends on the cause of the anxiety and the patient’s preferences. Often treatments will consist of a combination of psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, and medications.
A robust body of research documents that there are biological predispositions that often exist for depression, anxiety, and obsessive–compulsive disorder. However, new research has shown that medication is only mildly more effective than placebo in the treatment of these problems. In treating these conditions, neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback) may offer an alternative to invasive treatments such as medication, ECT, and intense levels of transcrancial magnetic stimulation. This paper reviews the neurofeedback literature with these problems, finding particularly positive research support for the treatment of anxiety disorders. New findings on the neurofeedback treatment of depression are presented.
